Our home away from home

Leamington Spa is a small town an hour and a half north of London.
We live close to the town centre with beautiful parks, cool pubs and great shoe shops.

Warwick is a town nearby with one of the coolest castles in England.

We visited just before Christmas with Ritchie and Trace. The grounds are spectacular in their own right but with the rooms recreated it is a fascinating journey into England's history.

This is a view from a toilet window inside the castle. The toilet consisted of a seat over a long drop hole about 3 storeys high. We spent hours exploring the different rooms and the castle grounds.

The climb of 300+ steps up the winding watch tower provided views of the entire grounds and over looked the temporary ice skating rink. All the outer walls had overhanging ledges with holes to pour hot and throw rocks through to anyone trying to break in.

We were keen to check out the dungeon but the reality of the conditions people spent their last days in was quite shocking. The etchings still visible in the walls gave us a rude reminder of the human suffering that was endured. The torture devices made us a little sick to our stomachs.

Upstairs was a completely different experience! The castle has been modified as wealthy families updated the interior to suit. There are wax models in each room including one of Wintson Churchill who was mates with one of the previous owners. The castle is now owned by Madam Tussaud which explains why there are so many wax models. Becs was mistaken for one by accident by a very embarrassed young girl who only realised after staring at Becs for a good few seconds a couple of inches from her face. The castle holds heaps of events over the year like ice skating and battle reenactments so its always good for a second visit.
